5 TIPS FOR BRUSHING BABY TEETH

For adults, brushing their teeth is a rather mundane and uneventful activity. However, getting children to brush their teeth is no less than waging a war, especially when your little one refuses to open his or her jaw. As cumbersome as it might be, it is important to inculcate healthy dental habits among kids right from the very beginning. This isn’t as difficult as it sounds, you simply have to follow some baby teeth cleaning tips and everything else will fall into place.

When should you start brushing your child’s teeth?
When it comes to dental heath, the earlier you start, the better. As a matter of fact, you must clean your child’s gums even before teeth begin to appear. Dentists recommend that parents must use a damp cloth to clean the gums twice a day or after the child has been fed.

In most cases, the first tooth appears when your child is six months old, though this can vary considerably from child to child. As soon as you see some fully visible teeth, you must buy a toothbrush for your kid. Kids’ toothbrushes are markedly different from adults’ toothbrushes as they have softer bristles and chunky handles. While choosing a toothbrush for your child, make sure that the bristles are gentle on the gums and teeth.

How important are milk teeth?
The teeth that appear during early childhood are commonly known as milk teeth or primary teeth. Some people tend to take milk teeth for granted since they fall off in a few years. However, such a careless attitude can prove detrimental in the long run. The truth is that milk teeth provide the space for permanent teeth to grow later on. So, if the primary teeth are unhealthy in the first place, they might grow irregularly, making way for a distorted dental structure In the future. Furthermore, your child learns speaking and eating while he or she has milk teeth. Therefore, it is very important that milk teeth grow properly inside the mouth.

Baby Teeth Cleaning Tips
Now that you have acquired the necessary information about your child’s teeth, it’s time to gain some practical knowledge. After all, it all boils down to developing the right attitude towards dental hygiene among your kids. Here are a few tips that should help you along the way:

1. Choose the right toothpaste- Toothpastes usually contain fluoride in varying quantities. Children have no source of fluoride save for these toothpastes, but, the quantity has to be appropriate for kids. Adult toothpastes have higher amounts of fluoride in accordance with the age of the people they are meant for. Therefore, pick a toothpaste with lower quantities of fluoride, say a toothpaste meant exclusively for kids.

2. Do it yourself- It is no secret that children love mimicking whatever they see. So, if they see you brushing your teeth twice a day, they will be tempted to follow suit.

3. Get fancy toothbrushes- Nothing attracts kids more than fancy little things. Precisely for that reason, buy toothbrushes with pictures of your child’s favorite cartoon characters. Children often take to brushing their teeth regularly just to play around with their cute toothbrushes.

4. Award kids initially- In the initial stages when your kids are still reluctant about brushing, try providing incentives. So, every time your kid remembers to brush his or her teeth before bedtime, get him a little something like a toy or promise him or her an extra cookie for breakfast. These seemingly trivial things can go a long way.

5. Make regular trips to the dentist- Parents often wonder about the right time to make the first trip to the dentist. The truth is that it is never too early. While a dental visit is not strictly necessary, it is a good idea to accustom your kid to a dental clinic as soon as possible. Additionally, the dentist could also teach your kids about brushing their teeth properly and other such things.
